Mental Benefits of Exercise

Observe people who go to the gym, engage in sports, or simply exercise regularly. You can see that aside from having fit bodies, they also have a more positive disposition and outlook in life. Indeed, exercise can certainly improve not only your physical health but your mental wellbeing as well.

First, when exercising, you certainly feel good. That is because when you lift weights, run around the park, or play in the field, the body triggers the production of endorphins. These are natural opiates that have a similar effect to that of morphine. They act as natural relievers to alleviate the pain and shock your body experiences when you exercise. Next, the release of endorphins also leads to a feeling of euphoria. That is why exercising is recommended if you are suffering from stress, anxiety, and depression. It is a better and safer remedy than any anti-depression or anti-anxiety medication in the pharmacy.

Aside from endorphins, regular exercise also increases brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels. Optimal levels of this substance plays an important role in improving your mood. In addition, BDNF help brain cells survive longer, making them more resistant to dementia. Next, as you see yourself looking better as you exercise regularly, you begin to regain your confidence, self-worth, and self-esteem. You begin to improve your perception of yourself. Because you have a healthy, youthful body, you feel better prepared to face and interact with people. Finally, exercise allows you to control your life better. Because fitness routines demand discipline, you begin to apply that discipline in your life. Thus, you will find it easier to stick to schedules and plans, for instance.
