How to Drive Safely When Stressed

We all know that driving while using your mobile phone or under the influence of alcohol is dangerous. But do you know that driving if you are fatigued, stressed, or plagued by strong emotions can also put your life in jeopardy while on the road? Experts strongly recommend that people avoid driving after a breakup, a confrontation with another person, an upsetting event at work, or similar events. However, if you must tackle the road, here are a few tips to manage your emotions and keep yourself safe while driving.

If you are furious, upset, or annoyed, you are susceptible to road rage. Thus, pull over at the side of the road or somewhere you can safely park. Try to relax and breathe deeply a couple of times. This meditative technique works wonders and you will be calm in no time at all. If the feeling is unusually strong, get off your car, take a short walk, or stretch your limbs.

If you are depressed or worried while on the road, pop in a CD in your car's stereo system and listen to your favourite song. Listening to music livens you up and distracts you from your worries. Listen to happy tunes or fast beats to keep your mind off your feelings. Also, some people talk silently, telling themselves that everything will be all right. You might want to try this technique of self-encouragement.

Finally, if you feel overly excited, rushed, impatient, listen to slow, calm music, which relaxes you and helps slow down your heart rate. You can also try looking at tranquil scenes such as the sky, the nearby hills, or even the city skyline in order to relieve yourself of the strong emotion you are feeling.
